When I think of Christmas, I think of family gathering together to celebrate the season with good food, hot cocoa, and gifts under the Christmas tree. You guys might not know, but my family is from El Salvador and I speak fluent Spanish. So we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve. We all get together around 10 o’clock at night and have Spanish Christmas music playing while we dance, laugh and have some holiday cocktails. My cousin and I are usually in the kitchen snacking on food, while my aunties are doing all of the cooking. Our traditional holiday dinner is tamalas and polo con dinero (chicken stuffed with bread lettuces, tomatoes and my mother’s secret sauces). It is sooo delicious! It’s my husband’s favorite meal and he does love my family’s cooking!
Once we are all done with dinner, we wait until the clock hits midnight and the kids begin to open their gifts. It’s so much fun to see how excited they get as they rip open their presents. I love seeing the smiles on my niece’s and nephew’s faces and hearing them say their excited thank-yous. I am so grateful that my family is super close and that we have that special bond of love. I will always treasure these special memories that I have of my family. This year Dan and I will be spending our first Christmas in Austin, TX with our wonderful pets. I’m so happy to still continue my family tradition. We will celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve and we will stay up until midnight to open gifts. And yes, I will have Christmas music and will dance with my husband to celebrate our joy. I hope you all enjoyed reading about my Christmas tradition. Merry Christmas Everyone!
